DIY Love Coat Rack

DIY: “LOVE” Coat Rack

I was feeling crafty around Christmas time (rare for me, as I’ve already stated, I don’t often have the time or energy for such things) and saw a cute idea on a mommy message board.  One mom had painted the letters “L” and “E” on the left and right sides of a piece of wood, and used her baby’s hand print to make the “O” and foot prints to make the “V.”  When you looked at it all together, it appeared to spell “LOVE.”  Super cute!

I was shopping for supplies at Hobby Lobby when I found this pre-made coat rack (about $15) and thought I could do the painting on it.  Not only would it be art, but it would be functional too!  I grabbed a couple other styles (which were given as gifts so I don’t have photos) and some paints and headed home to get to work before I lost my motivation.

I recommend buying a small foam roller (about 4″ wide) to apply the paint to your kid’s hands and feet– it will make the whole process a lot easier and slightly less messy (no dripping).  Have a damp towel on hand to immediately wipe off excess paint so there are no accidents.  I used acrylic paint for this project– it cleans right off skin and dries quickly on the wood.  The whole project cost about $25 and took only 30 minutes or so.  Lilu was a pro– her handprint looks stellar!  Annabelle, of course, was a little wiggly, so her feet are slightly smeared– but I was still happy with the result.  Especially for my first DIY project in a long time!

I actually hung it myself as well with two drywall anchors and a screwdriver.  Not the most fun part, but I was able to get it done in about 5 minutes.  The anchors say they can support up to 50 pounds and the coat rack itself is very sturdy, so it can hold plenty of items.  I’ve got multiple jackets and even the Ergo carrier ready to go by our door now.

Just for laughs

Yesterday’s entry was kind of heavy, so today I’m going to keep it light with a little game.  Can you guess what the drawing is above?  (Courtesy of then 5-year old Lilu and her 4-year old friend…at my baby shower).

If you guessed MERMAID you are CORRECT!

Liu and her friend then asked if they could go out front and “draw mermaids all over the sidewalk.”

Happy Monday mamas!

Stuff I Love: Photo Art

My house is covered in photographs– for a busy mom it was the easiest way to decorate.  I envy friends and family with their actual art, fancy Blenko glassware, and crafty furniture that they created from Pinterest ideas.  Unfortunately with two young children there is not much time to get crafty (aside from putting pictures in frames), and displaying expensive and breakable antiques is a recipe for disaster.

My brother is a professional photographer, so I asked if he could pretty please take a picture of the girls together in their matching Christmas coats.  He seemed to be dragging his feet getting the finished product back to me, but turns out that he had done something even better than simply editing and printing.

He took the photo and made it into a work of art using paint and pen.  Our backyard was kind of a lame backdrop, and the girls were originally sitting in a lawn chair.  Now they are sitting in a throne with a bright, almost kid-like grass and sky background– so fun and so cool!

I have no idea his exact technique, but wanted to share in case there are any mamas like me who love their photos, but might like an idea for how to jazz them up.  Or you can check out his website if you want a pro to do the work for you: http://www.dannygarska.com
